I've had my account since 02 July 2004. Still no IMAP. However, I've seen this with every feature upgrade - my Mum's account in the UK was created using an invite from mine, and she sees every new feature weeks before I do...
And not alphabetical either, my address starts with an 'e' hers with an 's'. Gmail have some weird roll-out procedures...
The server is the "master" in IMAP. Your mail client becomes a mail viewer. No more "my hard drive crashed and I've lost all my mail" worries. More importantly, it suits small devices with minimal storage like Nokia tablet or phone far better.
I've been using it in-office on Linux servers since late 90's and can access mail from any machine with no "sync" issues. The offline mode in Thunderbird etc takes care of concerns about always having to be connected.
If you want it, just configure your IMAP client to talk to Gmail and it works, you don't need to wait for the UI update. This guide has all the settings.

yes, I was an early adopter as well. still only POP. Maybe it's last-in-first-imap?

Can't recall exact start but a long time ago. I have imap since last week and family accounts (more recent) have option enabled also.

@conoro sounds good. I think I'm begining to get it. could be useful for someone using gmail on dail-up or via GSM to work offline.

Doh! Sorry to get your hopes up. It worked for a couple of people I know, so I assumed it would for everyone.

Strange: for 1 account it works, for my other gmail account it keeps displaying errors, although with same settings. :S

Another thing to try - make sure your display language setting in Gmail is "English (US)". It showed up on two of my accounts after I changed that :)
