It's to do with what the inner ear is feeling in terms of
balance and what the eyes are seeing. The eyes see static and the
body feels movement, hence the nausea.
Yeah what @warza said. Your
sense of balance is telling you that you are moving, but your sight
says you're stationary. The mixed messages cause nausea. Hence, to
avoid car nausea, you should keep looking out the window.
Oooh, I believe it was @edythemighty that actually
found the technical term for this (since I suffer from this, too):
simulation sickness. I cannot do any sort of reading in the car, or
else I get headaches. Sometimes I can do a little bit of Jaikuing
in the car (as a passenger) for a few minutes, but I inevitably get
a headache if I read for too long.
It's this simulation sickness that prevents me from being able
to play or watch any first-person view games, or watch any
home-movie-type videos, where the camera work is too shaky. A
minute or two (sometimes less than a minute if there's too much
panning) and my head starts pounding. I guess the brain interprets
the nausea as the presence of a toxin, so the impulse to throw up
is the body's defense against the (nonexistent) toxin.
I suffer from this as well. More than a couple of minutes of
using my BB, reading, etc and I turn green. This is why I
hate being a passenger on long trips

actually seems to be fine when I am driving - perhaps due to much less use.
