hmmm ... maybe I do need an ultra portable laptop for personal use. Make it nice to run those few PC apps (ahem Nokia)

I should track down Doug and check it out in person. I'm definitely interested in picking one up.

The CrunchGear reviewer. He lives in Boston.

Ah yes ... caught that. It definitely looks nice. It suddenly dawned on me that I could make use of a Windows machine in my personal computing. A small low cost laptop would be perfect. I'm not even sure I would need it really as a mobile device.

It can be so easy to justify a purchase sometimes...

The original EEE PC (701) can be found for dirt cheap now. I've seen some on craigslist for @ $250.

Just can't deal with the screen resolution on that one... I could give up bluetooth though I'd prefer it given my main needs would be for phones

Then the Wind might be the option. The features/price-point ratio is quite good.

though that new Acer looks good as does the HP Mininote

I would love a Ceilo Redfly that was OS indepent along with suitable software for my mobile in that mode. That would be less to deal with, but those Eee/Wind/Mini solutions are neat, and compelling.

  • atmasphere

The redfly is just an integrated keyboard and monitor which pulls from the phone though ... these other units are full very small pcs

Oh i know...just saying, in this class of devices, if the software is up to snuff on the mobile, I can totally get by with similar hardware that just uses my phone's software. Slightly different analogy than what you are saying I guess.

Have a word with @PhilHellene - he swears by his HP Tablet.

I have the Eee 701 and a Mini-Note. I prefer the Mini-Note, but still want to check out the Wind.

If the Eee 900's price point was lower, that would help it. It's $50 more than the Wind's MSRP.

What price point are you guys looking at? BestBuy has a 14' Gateway for $500. Amd 64x2 with 3gb of ram. It's alot of machine, but if you're spending that much anyways

That is a lot of bang ... But it needs much more desk

wish the mini-note had more ummph... love the design though. where's sony is this game I wonder. they were the de-facto standard in mini notebooks for so long. starting with the picturebook series, and then that crazy looking one that had a built in digicamera lens on the side. their keyboards were always so small. The u101 was a great little machine, kinda oqo size but a little bulkier. they have to have something up their sleeve, but they always have a higher price point.

well - none of us are the real target for the HP ... it's an education machine. While I use a PC for work, I am all Mac and home and use VMWare for Nokia apps ...

I have the top of line Mini Note and threw XP on it. It works great. It's a much better looking/better built machine than the Eee's. True, the target for these netbooks is mobility. Should be used basically for Word, e-mail, and Internet, etc. and not as a primary machine. It's nice to lighten the load on the shoulder. I'm sure any commuter will back me up on this!

Just say it's an old one you haven't used in a while. Works for me... sometimes.

Hah. When I used to buy phones constantly, I'd estimate the sales tax at 10% (it's really only 8.25% here in Texas). That way, I could honestly say 'it was cheaper than I thought it would be' when questioned. :)

1 year, 5 months ago by rcadden

  • bostonirishguy13

8.25%, yikes. That's like NY and CT. It's only 5% in MA, and there's no sales tax in NH (a 35-minute drive) for the big ticket items.

yeah, but we don't have state income tax or too many tollroads, either.

I swear by my 12" HP 2710p Tablet. It is a convertable but I use it primarily in Tablet mode, say around 95% of the time.

You can get an extended battery that covers the rear, which takes it's life from say 2-3 hours with wife and bells and whistles running to 5-6 hours and it only adds around "1/4" to the profile.

I work primarily in Ink in office 2007, having OneNote capture most things. Handwriting emails is a boon and you must Google for InkSeine - a phenomenal inking programme from Ken Hinckley & Team at Microsoft Research.

It fits in my £6 monopack from Tesco and has reduced my commute baggage by 3/4. Search on www.jkontherun.com for a review. James Kendrick liked the loaner so much he bought one.
